After the complete overwhelm that was last week, this week decided to go easy on me. Of course, there were more albums that came out, but only one that was on my radar and something I wanted to check out.
Winterfylleth — The Unyielding Season

Over the last decade, black metal has emerged as one of the most vibrant, varied, and vicious of the metal subgenres. There is an incredible amount of musical exploration done in this once dark and extreme style.
One of the aspects of black metal that most intrigues me is when bands infuse their black metal assault with aspects of their own lived experiences and geography. I can think of a number of bands whose sound is heavily influenced by where they hail from, and Winterfylleth falls into that camp.
Their latest album, The Unyielding Season, dropped this past Friday, and while I have only been able to give it one full listen through (yeah, yeah, Neurosis is still totally dominating), that one listen was enough for me to know I will be coming back. Many times. This atmospheric black metal is rooted in England and carries with it the weight of history. I look forward to giving this one more time.
You know, when I stop listening to that other album.
